Abstract
The purpose of this study was to comprehensively understand the suffering from loss and the social suffering, in other words, embitterment experienced during the process of medical litigation of the bereaved who have lost children due to medical malpractice. The bereaved assume that medical litigation investigating possible causes of death and determining those responsible for the death is unfair and unjust. However, until now, there have been few studies on their suffering resulting from the litigation. To collect the data, two instances of four-hour focus group interviews were conducted on the same group of seven parents who had lost their children due to medical malpractice and had undergone medical litigation. We used NVivo12 to analyze the data by open coding based on grounded theory. We derived four main themes from the analysis: ¡®emotional experience¡¯, ¡®influential elements of emotional intensity¡¯, ¡®situational conditions and coping strategies¡¯, and ¡®emotional change over time¡¯. In conclusion, we discussed characteristics of the suffering from loss and embitterment experienced during the process of medical litigation. We also suggested social measures to alleviate the suffering of the bereaved.
